Savor Cheap but Great Foods & Compare the Tastes of Korokke at Tokyo’s Good Oldtown “Tokoshi Ginza Shopping Street”
“Togoshi Ginza Shopping Street” (戸越銀座商店街) is located close to ‘Togoshi Station’ on the Toei Subway Asakusa Line or ‘Togoshi Ginza Station on the Tokyu Ikegami Line. About 400 stores are lined up on the street with a total length of about 1.3km. The most attraction of this shopping street is eating around, including the old town gourmets. Many people love to go shopping while enjoying Korokke (fried mashed patato), Yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and sweets. Please visit this shopping street when you leisurely want to eat around.
The reason for the birth of “Togoshi Ginza Shopping Street” was the start that the merchants from Tokyo and Yokohama who suffered devastating damage from the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 gathered in this place which had developed as an industrial area at that time. In addition, ‘Togoshi Ginza Station’ on the Tokyu Ikegami Line opened in 1927 and the shopping street became lively more. Currently, it has been a popular shopping street, which is featured on TV and magazines as a ‘shopping street full of downtown atmosphere’.
One of the popular foods on this street is the old downtown gourmet’s representative ‘Togoshi Ginza Korokke’. At first, it was sold by seven stores, including butchers and side dish stores, but gradually more stores began to sell it. Currently, about 20 stores sell each unique korokke. Each store sells several types of them, so you can enjoy their taste test. Furthermore, there are many old town gourmets which are perfect for eating around such as Yakitori and fried chicken. You should also try a sweets shop ‘Imo Stand by Dan Potato’ that uses sweet potatoes, which are representative of the taste of autumn, and a specialty shop specializing in fried chicken and Okinawan inari sushi ‘Toriinari’ that just opened in March this year. Fall might offer the best seasonal delicacies, so let’s enjoy the unique foods while taking a walk.
