A Sacred Place of Beauty That Fulfills Women’s Wishes: Kawai Shrine

Kawai Shrine, located within the grounds of Shimogamo Shrine, one of Kyoto’s most popular spiritual sites, has long been revered as a guardian shrine for women. Its deity, Tamayorihime-no-Mikoto, is cherished as a goddess who supports women throughout their lives, from the wish to be beautiful to safe childbirth, childrearing, and finding good relationships.

One of the most beloved rituals among visitors is the mirror-shaped ema charm. Guests paint makeup onto the illustrated face on the front as if it were their own to pray for beauty. On the back, they write their wishes before offering it at the shrine. It is said to enhance not only outer beauty but inner beauty as well. The small packet of sacred rice offered together, okuma, is rice presented to the deity; mixing it with your daily meal is believed to bring good fortune.

Within the grounds, you can also find a reconstruction of the hut of Kamo no Chomei, author of Hojoki. Chomei, who was the son of a priest of Kawai Shrine, is said to have spent his final years living quietly in this retreat.

Another notable spot is Tobe-no-Yashiro, one of the oldest shrines on the site, enshrining Yatagarasu-no-Mikoto. This sacred three-legged crow is revered as a divine guide of the Japanese land and is also known as the symbol of the Japan Football Association.
