Enjoy Summer in Asakusa at the Hozuki Market

If you’re visiting Asakusa in summer, don’t miss the Shimanrokusennichi Hozuki Market, one of the area’s most popular seasonal events. In 2026, the festival will be held at Senso-ji Temple on July 9 (Thu) and 10 (Fri). Known as a traditional summer event in Asakusa, it attracts many visitors and worshippers from Japan and around the world every year.

“Shimanrokusennichi” is a special temple fair day believed to bring blessings equal to 46,000 days — or about 126 years — of worship. During the event, the temple grounds are filled with colorful stalls selling bright orange-red hozuki (Japanese lantern plants), creating a beautiful summer atmosphere.

As you walk through the temple grounds, you can enjoy the sight of hozuki swaying in the breeze and the gentle sound of wind chimes, giving you a true taste of old-town Asakusa.

During the festival, visitors can also receive a special yellow talisman called the “Kifuda,” known as a charm for protection from lightning and misfortune. Since it is only available during these two days, many people come to receive it each year.

From evening into night, lanterns softly light up the temple grounds, creating a magical atmosphere different from the daytime. Many visitors stroll around in yukata, making it a perfect time to enjoy summer festival vibes and take memorable photos.

You can also explore Nakamise Shopping Street, try local street food, and enjoy sightseeing around Asakusa while visiting the event. Why not experience the special charm of summer in Asakusa at the Shimanrokusennichi Hozuki Market?
