Just like a storybook! Enjoy spring flowers in Koriyama, Fukushima

Fukushima Prefecture is surrounded by mountains and the sea. Among its many charms, in spring, you can’t miss the peach blossoms. Fukushima Prefecture is home to some of the few Hanamomo (花桃, peach blossoms) spots in Japan, earning it the name, Tougenkyo (桃源郷). Tougenkyo is derived from a famous story in Japan. You’re able to see the colorful, spring blossoms take over the mountains. Let us show you a flower watching plan that’s based in Koriyama.

※Photos are from past years, so the view may differ in 2024.

Hanamiyama Park (花見山公園) is located on a small, 180-meter mountain. In spring, starting with plum and cherry blossoms, other flowers like Hanamomo, forsythias, and magnolias blossom all at once. Peak viewing season is from the beginning of April to mid-April. Photographer Shotaro Akiyama once said, “Tougenkyo exists in Fukushima”, and now it is one of the most well-known spots to see spring flowers in this prefecture. The park is actually private property, and this flower farmer keeps it open to the public for free. This is why parties and picnics are prohibited here, and you enjoy the flowers by walking through the park. Simply revel in nature and the flowers, and enjoy some peace. When the weather is nice, you can see the contrast of the pink flowers on Mount Azuma-kofuji. It makes a great picture.

In spring, many kinds of flowers bloom one after the other to create a colorful, gorgeous Hanayashiki Park. You can see around 7,000 flowers like Hanamomo, forsythias, and camellias compete for the spotlight. The flowers are planted along the walkway, so you’re surrounded by colorful flowers on your walk. It feels like you entered another dimension. This park used to be private property, and it was maintained by a local resident. Its beauty became known, and soon, it was a popular spot for tourists from around the country. Peak viewing season is from the beginning of April to mid-April. They say viewing season might start earlier in 2024 due to the climate, so be on the lookout. However, there are many kinds of flowers, so viewing season is relatively long as well. Enjoy a nice spring day with a relaxing walk.

Finish off your day of flower watching with a nighttime viewing. In Fukushima, Hanamomo and cherry blossoms bloom at the same time, so you can see it all in one day. The Takizakura in Miharu-machi is a cherry blossom tree that is said to be over 1,000 years old. It’s one of the top three cherry blossom trees in Japan. The blooming flowers look like a cascading waterfall. “Taki” means waterfall in Japanese, thus, the name Takizakura. It was the first cherry blossom tree to be registered as a natural monument in 1922, and it is the most famous tree in Fukushima. The tree is in full-bloom at the beginning of April. You’ll be overwhelmed by just how beautiful it is. At night, the tree is lit up and more magical than ever. We recommend coming at night as well.
