A Day Full of Art in Tachikawa City’s Hottest Spot “GREEN SPRINGS”
In Tachikawa City, the cultural and economic hub of Tama Region of west Tokyo, you’ll find trails along rivers such as Tamagawa Josui waterway and nice and vast parks including Showa Kinen Park (昭和記念公園) that are perfect for a walk to feel the beauty of each season in spite of that the city is conveniently located only 40 minutes away by JR Chuo Line from the city center of Tokyo. Through the development undergoing recently, the number of large commercial complexes and cafes has been increasing. In this issue, let’s focus on the block called “GREEN SPRINGS” designed and opened as the urban culture space of the future in April 2020. We’ll Introduce a walking route where you can enjoy both nature and art appreciation at the same time. Let’s look around the art spots in Tachikawa to truly enjoy the autumn of art!
Use all of your five senses to enjoy the world of pictures and words at “PLAY! MUSEUM”

“PLAY! MUSEUM” is a very unique museum with the theme of ‘pictures and words’ that you probably cannot find anywhere else. No matter when you visit, you can enjoy exhibitions of picture books, cartoons, and art, and moreover, Annual Exhibition of 2021 ‘Guri and Gura: A book of happiness’ (ぐりとぐら しあわせの本) featuring a truly popular picture book ‘Guri and Gura’ (ぐりとぐら) loved by all generations is being held until March 2022. In addition to that, Special Exhibition ‘miffy 65 exhibition’ (誕生65周年 ミッフィー展) is also now in place until 12th September. Aside from the exhibition area, there is also a bit unusual playground area with more than 700 domestic and foreign picture books and unique large playsets, making it an ideal spot for kids to have fun and get creative. A huge playset and a cave made by cardboards for kids to explore are also available until the end of August.

Once your creativity’s been fulfilled, chill at “NORTH LINK coffee & tea” a cafe equipped with power supply and WiFi

Why not having some cozy time at “NORTH LINK Cafe” in ‘TACHIKAWA STAGE GARDEN’ after enjoying and playing at ‘PLAY! MUSEUM’? “The NORTH LINK Cafe” has a relaxing area and a co-working area, equipped with a power/USB supply and WiFi. You can enjoy some seasonal menu items in addition to regular ones such as pesticide-free coffee, tea and snacks either on terrace or inside the stylish cafe. Starting from this July, it now offers 7 choices of milk including alternatives such as almond & oats mix milk, macadamia milk and rice milk. Appreciate the works of artists having connection to Tama region at “Tamashin Museum”

Though “Tamashin Museum” (たましん美術館) that has just opened in June 2020 is small in scale, has a distinctive collection of works including ‘Tamashin Collection’ (たましんコレクション) focusing on works by artists who are creating works in Tama region and also those who are related to the region. Until 15th August, ‘Ashiato Vol.2 – Tama’s art seen from our collection and new works-‘ (足跡Vol.2~所蔵品と新作から見える多摩の美術~) is on, where you can see how the artists’ styles have changed corresponding to times. On the other hand, ‘The Foundation of Our Collection – KURATA saburo, SATO Tamotu, SEKI Gantei’ (コレクションの礎-倉田三郎・佐藤多持・関頑亭) will start on 28th August, featuring the works of three artists who have had a great influence on the establishment of ‘Tamashin Collection’ in the fields of Western painting, Japanese painting and sculpture respectively. Why don’t you spend your time enjoying art in the exhibition room that’s particular about exquisite lighting and air conditioning so that visitors can concentrate on first-class works of art?
