“MORIHICO.” (森彦), a cafe in an old wooden house built 70 years ago standing quietly in the back alley of the Maruyama area is the signature outlet of Atelier Morihico (アトリエ・モリヒコ), which runs 14 cafes and restaurants in Sapporo and Asahikawa. As you step into a fairytale-ish building covered with ivy, you’ll be welcomed by a calm antique interior. Looking out the window on the second floor with a nice view, the beautiful nature of the season awaits, such as crocuses in spring and green ivy in summer. When visiting, don’t forget to try ‘Mori no Shizuku’ (森の雫, drip of forest), the cafe’s special coffee you can enjoy only in this cafe among other cafes and restaurants ran by Atelier Morihico. The coffee goes very well with the famous ‘Gateau Fromage’ (ガトーフロマージュ), the signature dessert of the cafe. How about enjoying a relaxing time being surrounded by green with a cup of coffee?

Enjoy curry and parfait at “ROGA”, a cafe in a stone warehouse where you can feel the history

The stone warehouses scattered throughout Sapporo City were built with Sapporo Soft Stones (札幌軟石, welded tuff formed by cooling and solidifying a large-scale pyroclastic flow that occurred in the Shikotsu caldera approximately 40,000 years ago) excavated during the pioneering period from the Meiji (1868-1912) to Taisho (1912-1926) eras. In Sapporo, you can find shops and eateries in renovated such historical buildings and “Café & Bar ROGA” is one of them, a very popular old folk house cafe with a wide variety of parfaits and its special curry cooked by simmering without water for two days. Among the wide range of available parfaits, ‘Cheese Cheese Cheese Parfait’ (チーズチーズチーズパフェ), which is made with the handmade baked cheesecake and three kinds of ice cream, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, and mascarpone cheese, is definitely the one you want to try. Despite its being located in the busy area close to Sapporo Station, the warmth of the wooden interior creates a relaxing environment that makes you forget you’re in the busy neighborhood. Since it’s kind of a hideaway in the city, it should be the best place for a little break when you’re tired from walking around the city.

Sapporo’s first creperie with a motif of the church, “Creperie Tsuki”

“Creperie Tsuki” (クレープリー月) is Sapporo’s first crepe and galette specialty cafe that makes you feel like visiting a church somewhere in Europe. You’ll be fascinated at wall decorations and accessories resembling churches scattered throughout in the cafe, and rainbow-colored light coming through the stained-glass windows. The galettes prepared by Chef Kitano, who has practiced in French cuisine nearly for 20 years, are made with 100% buckwheat flour harvested and grained in Hokkaido. In addition to the simple ‘Sugar Butter Crepe’ (シュガーバタークレープ), you can enjoy various kinds of crepes and galettes including ‘Galette Alsace’ (ガレットアルザス) which is a combination of two kinds of sausages and choucroute and seasonal recommendations using seasonal ingredients. Besides, the crepe with caramel and the galette with meat go great with French cider. Why not enjoy your laid-back time with the authentic taste of French?
