Ring in a happy new year in Kyoto, Japan. Higashi Honganji Temple is a hidden gem.
Kyoto has many well known shrines like Fushimi Inari Shrine, Yasaka Shrine, and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. These spots are popular throughout the year, but on New Year’s Day, people flock to these places to kickstart the new year, and it’s difficult to even get to the shrines. For those who want a more peaceful New Year’s Day, we recommend Higashi Honganji Temple. It’s a major temple, but relatively less crowded.
Since it’s construction in 1272, the area went through 4 fires in the Edo period (1603-1868). It has been rebuilt multiple times. Three of the structures within the temple grounds are registered Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The Goeido-mon Gate has a fountain, and it is a popular spot for tourists and visitors.
From January 1st to 7th, special ceremonies will be held to wish for good fortune and health in the new year. Come by to escape the excitement of the new year for a while and peacefully pray for good health in the new year.
