Drawing New Attention from Overseas Travelers: The Retro Charm of Asakusa Underground Shopping Street

Tokyo’s Asakusa district, famous for landmarks such as Kaminarimon Gate and Senso-ji Temple, has long been one of Japan’s most iconic sightseeing areas—and it’s now a favorite among international travelers. In recent years, social media and film have sparked renewed interest in the nostalgic charm of Tokyo’s “retro downtown.” Among the highlights is the Asakusa Underground Shopping Street, Japan’s oldest underground arcade. Directly connected to Tokyo Metro’s Ginza Line Asakusa Station, this small passageway has supported the neighborhood for nearly 70 years since its opening in 1955. Its retro signboards, tiled walls, and long-standing eateries and barbershops preserve the atmosphere of the Showa era, offering visitors a true sense of time travel. The street even appeared in the 2024 Academy Award–nominated film “Perfect Days,” where actor Koji Yakusho’s character frequently visits—drawing attention from audiences around the world.

One of the most popular spots here is Fukuchan, a long-established yakisoba (fried noodle) shop with over 50 years of history. The shop’s amber-toned counter and the sizzling sound of noodles on the griddle are irresistible. Its signature dish, richly sauced yakisoba (from 350 yen), can be customized with toppings such as a fried egg or beef tendon—all for around the price of a single coin. The casual atmosphere invites both locals and visitors to enjoy a midday beer alongside their meal. Thanks to its appearance in the film, the number of foreign customers has grown, and Fukuchan has become known as a “local gourmet sanctuary” in Asakusa. Just a few minutes from the lively Nakamise shopping street, step below ground and experience the warmth and nostalgia of Showa-era Tokyo still alive today.
