“Fukui Sakura Festival” is Held until 10th April! A Walking Route from ‘Asuwa Riverside’ with 600 Cherry Blossom Trees

During the period of Fukui Cherry Blossom Festival between 26th of March 2022 and 10th of April 2022, there are many events going at and around “Asuwa Riverside” (足羽河原) that is one of the “Best 100 Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan” (日本さくら名所100選) certified by Japan Cherry Blossom Association. This time, we introduce a walking route from the event’s highlight “Asuwa Riverside”.

One of the “Best 100 Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan”, “Cherry blossoms along Asuwa River” to make a magnificent tunnel of blossoms

Lasting for around 2.2 kilometers, “Cherry blossoms along Asuwa River” (足羽川桜並木) is an ideal place where you can enjoy a leisure walk under the mild spring sunshine. Especially, along the leisure trail between ‘Shin-Akaribashi Bridge’ and ‘Kidabashi Bridge, around 600 cherry trees are planted on both banks, and a long tunnel of cherry blossoms appears when the spring comes. This scenery is named as one of the “Best 100 Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan” (日本さくら名所100選). During the period when the blossoms are in full bloom, they will be lit up so that the visitors can enjoy the fantastic view at night. On the first three days of April, a special lighting-up event with a lit-up cherry blossom tunnel and 3,000 cherry blossom-shaped paper-crafted lanterns attract visitors on the river bank.

On the precincts of “Asuwa-Jinja Shrine” (足羽神社), a shrine with a history of over 1,500 years, there is a 370-year-old weeping cherry tree deeply loved by neighbors that is a natural monument of Fukui City. It is a kind of weeping cherry tree with a feature of double-flowered blossoms in pale pink, and blossoms make the shape of a dome-like no other because the branches hang down evenly to every direction. After the sunset during the period of Fukui Cherry Blossom Festival, the tree is lit up in a fantastic manner and that creates a bewitching scenery the tree never allows you to enjoy under the daylight. In the usual year, the blossoms come to be in full bloom in the last week of March and last for a couple of weeks. When visiting, don’t forget to get the special Goshuin-cho (御朱印帳, Goshuin book) with the motif of the weeping cherry tree and the limited Goshuin (御朱印, a red ink stamp that each shrine and temple design uniquely) that are available only in this time of a year.
