“Okuno Building” in Ginza- The Commercial Facility Made from A Renovated Luxury Apartment with 90 Years of History

Ginza has a gorgeous image with luxury brand stores and skyscrapers. Among them, do you know that there is a building with a Showa atmosphere? This is the “Okuno Building”(奥野ビル), which is located just a short walk from Ginza 1-chome Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line. This is a commercial facility made from a renovated luxury apartment that was built in 1932.

“Okuno Building” that we are introducing this time was constructed as the apartment house called the ‘Ginza apartment’ designed by Ryuichi Kawamoto, who also worked on the Kudan Kaikan on the site of a factory that collapsed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. It is made of the sturdy construction of reinforced concrete. In addition, the elevator was also installed. At that time, it was installed only in department stores, so the building was known as a luxury apartment and many celebrities lived there.

Currently, there are art galleries and antique shops that are perfect for the retro atmosphere of the building, and this building has been reborn as a commercial facility. Among them, we would like to introduce the “Ginza Okuno Building Room 306 Project” on the 3rd floor. After the construction of the building, it rented room 306 which was occupied by “Suda Beauty Salon” and regularly opens the room to the public and holds events. It seems that the inside of the room keeps the same condition as when it was built as much as possible. Its wallpaper that was peeled off here and there makes you feel the 90 years of history.
