“Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle)” is one of the major sightseeing spots in Sendai City. The castle was built in 1602 by Lord Date Masamune. Afterward, Masamune’s statue on horseback was also created as a symbol of this great castle. Meanwhile, it is also famous as a viewing spot overlooking the city of Sendai from its hillside location. Then, you can even see the Pacific Ocean ahead on sunny days. “Sendai Astronomical Observatory” was built under the concept of “Feeling closer to the universe.” Visitors can see and experience the universe closely in one of the largest exhibition rooms in Japan. You can learn about space science as the life of stars and the method of measuring distances to stars, in addition to the history of astronomy. Furthermore, you will find historical “astrolabe,” “quadrant,” and “celestial globe,” which are nationally designated important cultural properties on display.
