Sumida River Fireworks Festival is one of the most awaited summer events in Tokyo. It has been held since 1978, and the name before that was Ryogoku no Kawabiraki (両国の川開き), and until 1961 it was launched upstream of Ryogoku Bridge. According to historical records, In 1732, a great famine broke out, and many people died of starvation. In 1733, to pray for the souls and ward off the plague, raising the river is said to be the origin of Ryogoku no Kawabiraki. However, due to the deterioration of traffic conditions, the event could not be held from the following year onwards, in 1961. After that, the name was changed to Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival and it was revived on the upstream of Sumida River, where it continues to be held until the present day.

Many people eagerly anticipate this festival every year, but it has been canceled since 2019. However, after a 4-year hiatus, it will make a comeback this summer! Visitors can look forward to a captivating display of powerful fireworks in collaboration with the iconic symbol of Tokyo, TOKYO SKYTREE®. The festival will be held on July 29th. At the 2nd venue, from Komagatabashi downstream to Umayabashi upstream, the fireworks will start at 7:30 PM. In total, approximately 20,000 fireworks will be launched.
