In 2024, the Sapporo Snow Festival will be held for the 74th time. This annual event originated in 1950 when local middle school students made sculptures in the city’s central Odori Park, initially a snow disposal yard. After that, the scale gradually expanded, evolving into the creation of large-scale snow sculptures. With the Sapporo Olympics held in 1972, the city gained recognition overseas and has now become a major event that attracts tourists from all over the world. There are many highlights to see, including not only the Odori site, which is adorned with snow sculptures towering to the size of buildings, but also the Susukino site, where delicate ice sculptures are on display, and the Tsudome site, where you can play with snow attractions such as ice slides. If you have time, how about visiting various venues? It will be illuminated every day during the period, so the night view is a must-see! The photo shows the Odori site seen from the Sapporo TV Tower, allowing you to enjoy the fantastic atmosphere of the glittering snow and ice sculptures.

Susukino is one of the sites for the Sapporo Snow Festival. With the theme of ‘enjoying ice,’ there are large and medium-sized ice sculptures lined up. The ice sculptures are carefully crafted by craftsmen and look like works of art. There are also ice sculptures that you can touch, so try touching them. Susukino is the largest entertainment district in Hokkaido, and when you visit it at night, it’s colored with glittering neon lights and the ice sculptures sparkle, creating a very magical atmosphere. Enjoy the charm of delicate ice in Susukino, different from the Odori venue where large snow sculptures are lined up. At the ice bar, where you can eat and drink, everything, from the tables to the chairs, is crafted from ice and you can also enjoy alcohol in a space surrounded by ice. Experience the unique atmosphere of Sapporo at this time of year!
