Breakfast at a unique, ancient India-style temple: Tsukiji Hongwanji. Their “18 dish breakfast” is full of Tsukiji flavors.
Tsukiji Hongwanji, near Tsukiji Market, is a unique temple that incorporates ancient Buddhist imagery. It’s a temple, but it also has a restaurant and a cafe. One of the popular menu items is the “18 dish breakfast” at one of their cafes. It has 16 side dishes, rice porridge, and miso soup. The number 18 in this breakfast set is representative of an important ideology in Buddhism. The set includes side dishes from famous shops in Tsukiji and fresh local produce. You can enjoy the tastes of Tsukiji without going all the way to Tsukiji Market. The rice porridge is all-you-can-eat, so you can eat until you’re full. They open at 8:00AM, but it gets busy, so we recommend you make a reservation.

People line up for this stewed offal restaurant: Kitsuneya. Power up with their tripe bowls!
This beef bowl/stewed offal restaurant has been a beloved establishment in Tsukiji since its opening in 1947. There is always a line to get into this popular place. Their famous stewed offal has been passed down 3 generations. The offal is stewed in a Hatcho miso (八丁味噌) base, and they also make sure the offal is fresh. The stew is made using the tsugi-tashi (継ぎ足し) method which means the stew base hasn’t changed since the shop first opened and soup is added to it so it doesn’t run out. Hatcho miso is red, so it looks like it has a strong taste, but it’s actually full of umami. It pairs well with rice, so we recommend the tripe bowl if you’re hungry. They open at 6:30AM, so start off your day full of energy. On a day off, it might be nice to day drink with some beer and stewed offal on the side.
