Enjoy the rainy season in Asakusa by looking at hydrangeas ♪ The Iki-Iki Asakusa Hydrangea Festival at Chokokuji Temple
Chokokuji Temple is a 10-min. walk from Asakusa, Tokyo’s symbolic Kaminarimon. On June 15th and 16th, the Iki-Iki Asakusa Hydrangea Festival (いきいき浅草あじさい祭り) will be held. You’ll find rare hydrangeas from all over Japan at the festival which is being held for its 21st time. It’s become a rainy season staple in Asakusa. You can look at over 100 different types of hydrangeas, buy hydrangeas in baskets, pray for good health with special incense infused with hydrangea leaves, and see old-fashioned street sellers. There’s so much to do and see!
In Asakusa, there is a special annual event for good luck and prosperity that started in the Edo period (1603-1868). Chokokuji Temple is known for being the place where that event was born. The Iki-Iki Asakusa Hydrangea Festival is held every year to “take a break from summer and refresh your body and soul.” You can even experience a traditional Japanese healing method that involves placing a plate on your head.
In addition, they will serve an herbal cucumber soup that’s perfect for preventing heat exhaustion! Come by to soothe your soul and beat the heat.
