Yamagata Prefecture is known for being the noodle mecca of Japan. Soba noodles are very popular here. Shojiya was built toward the end of the Edo period (1603-1868). It’s the oldest restaurant in Yamagata Prefecture. It is also known for being the tastiest restaurant in Yamagata. Their most popular item is the Aimori-Ten (相盛り天) or Ita-Ten (板天). Their soba is fragrant and has a wonderful mouth feel. Be sure to come hungry. There are stores near Yamagata Station and in Nanokamachi, so stop by wherever you are.

Enjoy the wonderful harmony of Japanese food and local sake at Kawanari

川なり(Kawanari)

Kawanari uses plenty of local produce from Yamagata. They have small plates, sashimi, grilled fish, and set menus. Many people make reservations and the restaurant fills up quickly, so we recommend checking with the restaurant before you go. They have a lot of local sake from Yamagata as well, so you’ll love it if you love a good drink. The foods are made to pair well with the sake. The dishes use seasonal ingredients, so you might find a new dish every time you go.

Asagi is a grilled chicken and sake restaurant. The chicken is grilled to order, and the restaurant has a chic, modern atmosphere. It’s popular with women and solo travelers. They care about their ingredients. The chicken is from Iwate Prefecture and they take the time to create each Yakitori (焼き鳥, grilled chicken skewer). Enjoy the high-quality chicken with some Japanese sake. To finish off your meal, get the chicken ramen. The broth is made with care and filled with umami. You’ll feel a special kind of bliss when you eat it.
