If You’re Looking for Cherry Blossoms in Kyoto, Head to the Hidden Gem “To-ji Temple”

When people think of spring in Kyoto, countless famous cherry-blossom spots come to mind. Among the many places perfect for hanami, one recommendation is To-ji Temple — a calm and lesser-known destination where you can enjoy the flowers at a relaxed pace. Although To-ji is widely known as a World Heritage Site, it remains relatively understated as a cherry-blossom location compared to Kyoto’s more crowded landmarks. That’s why it offers a rare chance to experience a peaceful spring moment in the city.

The symbol of To-ji’s cherry blossoms is the large weeping cherry tree called Fujizakura, which blooms beautifully in front of the five-story pagoda. Over 120 years old, the tree stands about 13 meters tall with branches spreading nearly 10 meters wide. The elegant silhouette of the blossoms alongside Japan’s tallest existing five-story pagoda creates a truly iconic spring scene unique to To-ji. Interestingly, Fujizakura is actually a relatively new addition to the temple grounds — it was originally grown in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, and donated to To-ji in 2006. Because of this, the area still retains a hidden-spot atmosphere.

The name Fujizakura is said to come from the Buddhist concept of “non-duality” taught by Kobo Daishi Kukai. The idea of embracing differences as one is reflected in the tree’s name, and the blossoms harmonize beautifully with the solemn temple surroundings. In addition to Fujizakura, around 200 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino, bloom across the grounds, offering visitors a variety of seasonal views depending on where they walk.

To-ji’s official name is Kyo-o-Gokoku-ji Temple, a head temple of the Shingon sect founded around the time of the Heian capital’s establishment. Even today, traditions such as the monthly Kobo Market held on the 21st continue to connect the temple with everyday life and faith. During spring, a limited-time nighttime illumination transforms the cherry blossoms into a magical evening landscape, completely different from the daytime atmosphere. For those who want to step away from the crowds and quietly appreciate Kyoto’s spring, To-ji is a destination well worth visiting.
