Speaking of fruits which is symbolic of Yamagata prefecture, it’s ‘Sakuranbo (cherry).’ Sakuranbo was imported from Western countries at the early Meiji period for the first time, and now, Yamagata produces the largest amount of them in Japan. It’s said that the landscape surrounded by mountains and lower rainfall than other regions during the rainy season, the four seasons having stark contrast from one another and so on make Yamagata the best place to grow Sakuranbo. Having been carefully cultivated one by one from pruning branches to harvesting, Sakuranbo from Yamagata has a juicy taste and both sour and sweet flavors. Anyway, “Yamagata Sakuranbo Kirara (山形 さくらんぼきらら)” is a bite-sized sweet that wraps Sakuranbo carefully selected from them with jiggly jelly. It’s better if you put it in the fridge for a while first. In addition, each piece is separately wrapped, so we recommend that you buy them as souvenirs for a large number of people such as your friends or colleagues.

Having been grown in Tsuruoka city of Yamagata prefecture since the Edo period, ‘Dadacha beans’ is a rare variety that can be harvested only here and called ‘King of Edamame (green soybeans).’ ‘Dadacha’ means father and middle-aged person in the local dialect of the Shonai region. Apparently, the name comes from what a feudal lord who loved Edamame said -Doko no Dadacha no Edamame ka? (Which man did grow this Edamame?) “Dadakko Pudding (だだっ子プリン)” is sweets made by mixing plenty of Dadacha beans from Turuoka and fresh milk from Japan. You can enjoy not only a rich flavor of the beans but also 3 layers whose textures change each time you scoop it with a spoon. Its recipe was developed over two years while the trial production was repeated, so lots of attractions are packed in this small jar.

“Tamayura,” the collaboration of Yamagata’s famous confectionery ‘Noshiume’ and Ganache made in the same method of Japanese sweets

Do you know Yamagata’s famous confectionery ‘Noshiume (Thin Plum Jam Agar, のし梅)’ that originated from a folk medicine during the Edo period? It’s one of Japanese traditional confectionery made by mashing plum and kneading it in agar, spreading it into a thin layer and being dried. By the way, an old-established Japanese confectionery shop with 200 years of history ‘Noshiumehonpo Sato-ya’ has created new sweets combining Western and Japanese ones with the motto ‘To make Japanese confectionery a little freer.’ Among them, “Tamayura (たまゆら)” is a neo-Japanese confectionery -Noshiume put on Ganache made by using sweet white bean paste and agar instead of butter. After a rich chocolate flavor bringing out the scent of cacao, sweet and sour flavors of Noshiume explodes in your mouth. It is like the Japanese-style orangetto, and makes a very good match with boozes as well as coffee and tea because it contains low fat.
