The starting point for Japan’s national highways watched over by the winged Kirin -“Nihombashi Bridge”
“Nihombashi,” literally meaning Japan Bridge, is the place where you can see a part of Japanese history such as the letters written by the last shogun, Yoshinobu Tokugawa, and a mark of incendiary bombs dropped during the Great Tokyo Air Raid. This time, we’re going to introduce its history.
The bridge was born as the starting point of Japan’s five main highways by the order of Ieyasu Tokugawa during the Edo era. At the Meiji period, ‘Kilometre Zero’ road marker was set, and now, Nihombashi is designated as the initial point of many national highways including Japan National Route 1. Rebuilt in 1911, the current bridge is recognized as a National Important Cultural Property.
The highlight is the central pillar made with bronze. Its design containing both Japanese and Western styles looks like expressing the situation of the Meiji era when it began to adopt Western culture. At the base of the pillar, there are two Kirin statues with wings. It seems that it was made with a theme of ‘To fly away from the starting point of the national highway network.’ When it gets dark, the orange light is given off by lamps and allows you to take a retro and sorrowful pic.
