Here are three recommended spots where you can experience the nature and history of Sendai and learn. All spots can be visited on foot or by bus from Sendai Station without changing trains.
Pay attention to the planetarium with a variety of screening contents! -Sendai Astronomical Observatory” allowing you to experience the universe
“Sendai Astronomical Observatory (仙台市天文台),” the largest astronomical museum in Japan, is a three-story building with lots of equipment and contents that make you feel closer to the universe. Of particular note is the Planetarium, which has 270 seats on the first floor. It shows us a great variety of videos: “Starry Sky Time” that the staff will explain in front of visitors, “Kids’ Time” that gives learning while children including even small one have fun, “Astronomical Time” telling us more about astronomical objects, and more. Since the types differ depending on the screening time, you can select and watch the content you are interested in. It’s also one of the charms that changing of the screening contents depending on seasons and events makes us discover new things and get new impressions every time we visit. The screening schedule and screening contents are written on the official website, so please check it out.

Japan’s national treasures and important cultural properties gather! -”Sendai City Museum” storing over 90,000 items related to Sendai’s history
The “Sendai City Museum (仙台市博物館)” opened in 1961 at the site of Sendai Castle Sannomaru. It stores approximately 98,000 items, including a national treasure designated as a UNESCO memory heritage, armor designated as an important cultural property used by Date Masamune and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ukiyo-e prints and dolls created in between the 1600s and 1800s, etc. In the permanent exhibition space, exhibitions are changed every season, and about 1,000 items are displayed at any time. It seems that real things are exhibited as much as possible because they want visitors to know charms and power of these materials. Moreover, the fact that there are restaurants and shops is a nice point for families with children. At the open-air restaurant, which is entirely covered with glass, you can take a break while enjoying the calmn scenery surrounded by nature. Don’t forget to get original goods that can only be found here at the shop!

Let’s take home memories of your trip such as folding fans, herbarium, and aroma wax! -”Hasunohane School Sendai” full of workshops that adults and children can enjoy
Reference from 仙台旅先体験コレクション “宮城・仙台 七夕和紙紋切り体験“
“Hasunohane School Sendai (はすのはねスクール仙台)” gives you various creative experiences, such as ‘Carving Experience’ to engrave vegetables, fruits and soap with a single knife, ‘Flower Jelly Experience’ to inject colored jelly and draw flowers, ‘Herbarium Experience’ and ‘Aroma Wax Experience.’ Especially, we recommend you try ‘Crest Pattern Cutting.’ It is to make a family crest by folding Japanese paper and cutting it out. From the 1600s to 1800s, it was popular as a play for the common people. First, choose your favorite color and pattern of Japanese paper and your favorite family crest. Cut the Japanese paper with scissors according to the mold, and stick the finished family crest on the folding fan. There are various ways to enjoy it, such as making a matching design for the whole family or making it your own original. The folding fan made while experiencing the play of people in the Edo period should be a lifetime memory. A gentle female instructor will carefully guide you, so even small children can take on the challenge with confidence.
