3 Ginza’s Must-Get Japanese Sweets with Great Presentation, Taste and Originality
As you know, Ginza District itself has a rich history since 16th century, it is one of the best places to look for traditional confectioneries in Tokyo. Among the uncountable number of traditional confectioneries found in the district, let us introduce you the threes having unique senses of presentation, taste and originality; a monaka (traditional wafer sands) loved by Tokyoites for over half a century, a smooth yet jiggly nerigashi (traditional cake) you can’t get without a reservation, and one-bite-sized sweets reflecting the fusion of Japanese traditional presentation of beauty and modern art.
8,000 pieces are instantly sold out a day! Organic & Handmade “Kuuya Monaka” with the sweet flavor and crispy texture
‘Kuuya’ (空也) has tucked away on Namiki Street (並木通り) since 1884. The specialty of the shop is “Kuuya Monaka” (空也もなか), a simple masterpiece. In between gourd shaped dried baked wafers, you’ll meet the gentle sweetness of tsubuan (mashed red bean jam) that are cooked over four hours with red beans, shiro zarame (white crystal sugar) and mizuame (concentrated syrup) in every morning. Despite the utmost and gentle care confectioners make while preparing every morning and organic ingredients, a box of ten pieces costs only 1,030 yen. It is likely unable to get your monaka without a reservation, you are recommended to have called before visiting the shop.

Reservation required! “Kazuya no Ren Matcha” whose gentle and elegant sweetness matcha fills your mouth
In case you don’t know the exact location of ‘Ginza Kazuya’ (銀座かずや) which is only three square meters big, you probably miss the shop even if you walk down the street on which the shop is located on. The purpose of the goers to this shop is “Kazuya no Ren matcha” (かずやの煉 抹茶) wrapped with a bamboo leaf. Kazuya, the owner confectioner of ‘Ginza Kazuya’, who has experienced as a cook in traditional restaurants, spent over two years to complete this confectionary. Kazuya says it is made of carefully selected high-quality matcha from Fukuoka, and kneading it patiently and gently while heating it with wasanbon sugar, Yoshino honkuzu (arrowroot raised in Yoshino district in Nara prefecture), and bracken starch. The one-of-a-kind smooth and jiggly texture is the highlight of “Kazuya no neri matcha” in addition to the bitter yet gentle sweetness of matcha spreading in your mouth. In order to get one for sure, you are strongly recommended to make a reservation before visiting the shop.

Never-experienced flavor natured by the strange combination of ingredients! “Hitokuchikashi” with adorable round shape
‘HIGASHIYA GINZA’ is on the second floor of a building located on Chuo Street (中央通り), the main street of Ginza. The shop is known for its unique concept delivering stylish and elegant confectionaries that have evolved modernly while retaining the old tradition. At the annexed café, you can enjoy more than 30 types of tea and original dishes made with seasonal ingredients. Our recommendation is “Hitokuchikashi” (ひと口果子), created by the thoughts to the fruits and nuts that are said to be the beginning of confectionery. There are nine flavors available, and each piece is lovely round shaped and named after a Japanese traditional color. Besides its kawaii presentation, each combination of ingredient and bean jam is very unique. Among the nine flavors, you should definitely try ‘Natsume Butter’ (棗バター), putting fermented butter and walnut in a date palm, and ‘Torinoko’ (鳥の子), honey jelly in white bean paste with ginger. Also, you don’t want miss the seasonal limited flavors.
