謝甜記の中国粥(Shatenki's Chinese Congee)

Chinese restaurant “Shatenki” (謝甜記) founded in 1951 has two outlets in Yokohama Chinatown. Among the various homemade dishes such as fried rice, shrimp chili and dumplings, Chinese porridge (中華粥) is THE one you definitely want to try.  The rich flavor of the porridge comes from the soup stock stewing rice, dried oysters, dried scallops and a whole chicken for four hours. Including seafood porridge (三鮮粥) with fish, whelks and squid, century egg porridge (ピータン粥) and abalone porridge (鮑粥), there are over 20 kinds of porridges available you can enjoy. In addition, you can customize your porridge by adding topping items such as coriander (パクチー), stir-fried mustard (炒め高菜) and fried stick (ヤオチャッカイ). Enjoy your own customized porridge also by adding flavors as soy sauce, chili oil, welsh onion and zha cai.

“Uchikipan” (ウチキパン) established in 1888 has been offering breads with simple and gentle taste that does not get tired of eating every day. Around sixty kinds of breads can be seen from the street though its windows and that sharpen your appetite. The bakery is known as a birthplace of Japanese white bread. Some enthusiasts repeatedly visit the bakery all the way from afar in search of the bread “England” (イングランド), a never changing white bread since the bakery’s establishment. One of the secrets of the recipe, fermenting with homemade hops for more than 10 hours without yeast, can create simple yet full flavor. Though It takes more time and effort in preparing with hops than doing so with yeast, more the umami can be created,” says the owner of the bakery.
