In Kisarazu, a city facing Tokyo Bay, you can enjoy the full bloom of cherry blossoms late in March to early in April. By taking Limited Express Sazanami (特急さざなみ), you can access the city only by 50 minutes from Tokyo Station. In this article, let us introduce our three recommended spots where you can heal yourself and enjoy the view of cherry blossoms within a 15-minute walk from Kisarazu Station.

“Odayama Park”, the best cheery blossoms viewing park in Kisarazu with 300 cherry trees
Overlooking Tokyo and Yokohama from the observation tower located in the park

太田山公園(Odayama Park)

In “Odayama Park” (太田山公園), you can enjoy around 300 cherry trees of Somei Yoshino (ソメイヨシノ), Oshima Zakura (オオシマザクラ) and Weeping cherry (シダレザクラ). For feeling the spring with cherry blossoms, many people visit the park not only from the neighborhood but also from Tokyo. From the highest point of the park, you can also observe Kisarazu together with its surrounding areas and Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line (東京湾アクアライン).  In addition, by climbing up to the top of Kimisarazu Tower (きみさらずタワー), the greater view of Tokyo, Yokohama and even Tokyo Skytree in fine weather is available. The view from the tower is named one of the 100 Greatest Views in Chiba Prefecture. Enjoy your peaceful day overlooking the panoramic view together with cherry blossoms at a time.

“Shojoji Temple” where the legend that became the model for a nursery rhyme has been handed down since the Edo period

証城寺(Shojoji Temple)

“Shojoji Temple” (証城寺) is said to have been built in the early Edo period. Though it is located only within a reach of a 9-minute walk from Kisarazu Station, the quietness and the calmness govern the precincts of the temple surrounded by trees such as pines, cedars and cypresses. Since the temple is facing ‘Yana River’ (矢那川) dressed by 100 cherry trees alongside, we suggest you walking along the river on your way to the temple. The temple is also famous for having ‘the Legend of Tankibayashi’ (狸ばやしの伝説). The legend is a strange yet sad story. Osho (Buddhist priest) and a tanuki (Japanese racoon dog) sing and danc together on a moonlit night and the tanuki is drumming its belly to the rhythm. Eventually, the tanuki goes to death because the belly skin of the tanuki is peeled off. For mourning the tanuki, the Osho is said to have built ‘Mujinazuka’ (狸塚) which still remains on the precincts today. The legend came to be a nursery rhyme called “Shojiji no tanukibayashi” (証城寺の狸ばやし) and is widely handed down even to children of 2020s. Though the legend here in “Shojoji” Temple is very sad, don’t forget to enjoy cherry blossoms along the river.
