Blissful time with a cup of the superb Uji Matcha at “IPPUKU & MATCHA”

If you are interested in tasting a cup of ‘Uji Matcha’ (宇治抹茶) in the center of Tokyo, “IPPUKU & MATCHA” is the place to visit. Though it’s relatively common enjoy tea with blended tea leaves from different origins and varieties, this cafe sticks to offer drinks brewed only from truly rare carefully select hand-picked Uji Matcha of a single variety harvested in a single tea plantation. It has a commitment to produce the best tea time for you such as offering drinks in finest teacups. For instance, your Matcha is served in Edo Kiriko (江戸切子, Edo’s traditional method to cut clear colors and delicate patterns into glass) teacup. Although it’s nice to enjoy a cup of Match at the tea room hidden in the back of the cafe, you can enjoy the mild autumn sunshine and the breeze together with your choice of Matcha drink casually in the terrace seats. The beautiful jewel-like cakes, such as the specialty ‘Bernard’ (ベルナール) made with pistachio and chocolate mousse, pleases not only your mouth but also your eyes. Try the signature Hayashi Rice and just lay back at “MARUZEN café Nihombashi”

A long-established bookstore with a history of over 150 years, Maruzen (丸善), runs a cafe in Nihombashi. The interior is decorated with wood-grain creating a chic environment, and the comfortable quietness that’s particular to bookstores. It’s a perfect place to take a rest after looking around the bookstore. The signature menu here is ‘The Original Hayashi Rice’ (元祖・早矢仕ライス, Hayashi Rice is Japanized hashed beef served with steamed rice), which is said to be devised by Yuteki Hayashi (早矢仕有的), the founder of Maruzen. Along with Renga-Tei (煉瓦亭) in Ginza and Seiyoken (精養軒) in Ueno, it is said the first restaurant to have offered Hayashi Rice. The rich demiglace sauce, which lingers the days in the Meiji Period (1868-1912) where westernization was rapidly happening, has a rich taste that makes it addictive. If you like a light snack, the combo of a cup of coffee and the lemon cake associated with Motojiro Kajii’s (梶井基次郎) novel ‘Lemon’ (檸檬) about Maruzen is recommended.
