One of 10 Tokyo Shrines -“Shinagawa Shrine” is Famous for Praying at the Battle of Sekigahara by Tokugawa Ieyasu

品川神社(Shinagawa Shrine)

“Shinagawa Shrine” (品川神社) located in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo was built in 1187. There are many highlights such as a power spot where you can improve your fortune by washing your money, and a rare torii gate with only three in Tokyo.

双龍鳥居(Soryu Torii)

Before entering the gate, the first one you see is the Shinagawa Shrine’s torii. On the left side, the Nobori-Ryu (昇り龍, Ascending Dragon) rises, carved into the pillar, while on the right side is its counterpart, the Ori-Ryu (降り龍, Descending Dragon), it’s named ‘Soryu Torii’ (双龍鳥居, a pair of dragons’ torri). The dragon gates exist only 3 places in Tokyo, including Shinagawa Shrine, Mabashi Inari Shrine (馬橋稲荷神社), and Koenji Temple (高円寺), called ‘The 3 gates of Tokyo’ (東京三鳥居). In addition, when you pass through the torii, there are powerful 53 stone steps. The place is known for the location of the famous Japanese movie, ‘Shin Godzilla’.

Moreover, you can see the worship hall at the top of these stone steps. The hall is enshrined Amenohirinome-no-Mikoto (天比理乃咩命) as deities of maritime traffic safety and prayer fulfillment.

赤色鳥居(Red Torii Gates)

Next to the hall is lined with red torii gates, it’s the popular photo spot. Through the torii and go ahead, there is ‘Ana Inari Shrine’ (阿那稲荷神社) that brings you good luck with economic fortune and good business. ‘Ichiryu Manbai Fountain’ (一粒萬倍の泉, even the greatest profit arises from the smallest of beginnings) is located inside the shrine. It’s believed that visitors are able to obtain blessings that will raise their economic fortune by washing money and seals at the fountain.

There are many highlights on the premises, including the Treasure Hall, Kagura Hal, Itagaki Taisuke’s Tomb and Fujizuka. Why not take a walk around the shrine with a lot of greenery and a calm atmosphere?
