Refresh with Lush Greenery – Experience the Scenery from Different Perspectives on a Stroll through “Kiyosumi Garden”
Kiyosumi Shirakawa is a waterside town, located near the Sumida River. This lush, green area is home to the “Kiyosumi Garden”(清澄庭園) which offers seasonal plants such as cherry blossoms in Spring and autumn leaves in Fall. This garden is a Kaiyu-shiki rinsen teien (回遊式林泉庭園, Japanese stroll garden) that features a large pond and is designated as the scenic spot of Tokyo Prefecture in 1979. During the early summer, making it the perfect place for a leisurely stroll in the sunshine. How about enjoying the fresh greenery of early summer which is shining in the sun while leisurely strolling?
“Kiyosumi Garden” was opened in Koto-ku, Tokyo Prefecture in 1932. Originally part of Kinokuniya Bunzaemon’s residence, a merchant during the Edo period. The garden was bought and remodeled by Iwasaki Yataro, the founder of Mitsubishi, who was known for his love of gardening. After Iwasaki passed away, the traditional garden was donated to Tokyo and has been maintained ever since. In 1979, it was designated as the scenic spot of Tokyo Prefecture and has become a garden visited by many people.
This garden is designed in a style known as ‘Kaiyu-shiki rinsen teien’. In the center of the garden, there is a large pond that used to draw water from the Sumida River in the past. As a result, the amount of water changes with the ebb and flow of the tide, and the scenery gradually changes in accordance with it, creating a unique and constantly changing atmosphere. Currently, we can’t see such a situation because the pond is used rainwater, but it’s possible to change the viewpoint by walking the walking path that surrounds the pond. You can enjoy the view while walking around for about 40 minutes. With its lush greenery and the slightly stronger sunlight of the coming season, Kiyosumi Garden is the perfect place to relax and observe the young leaves growing lively in the open garden.
