Asakusa Shrine was built in the 7th century. The name, “Sanja Matsuri”, comes from the 3 gods that are worshipped at this shrine. These gods are said to be the ones that founded Asakusa. Sanja Matsuri is a festival of appreciation for these gods and has over 700 years of history. One of the marks of the festival is the “passion.” During the event, over 100 palanquins go around the city and those carrying them shout “Wasshoi!”. “Wasshoi” is a festival cheer in Japan. The excitement, the passion, the echoing drums and flutes. Everything comes together to bring the city to life.

One part you can’t miss is the event on the last day of the festival. Three palanquins are carried out of Asakusa Shrine early in the morning and go around the city to pray for safety and bountiful harvests. The 1-ton palanquins charge forward above the cobblestone. It’s a breathtaking sight. The festival is also marked by the old streets of Asakusa, the decorated shop streets, and the lights at night. Interact with local residents, enjoy local foods from food stalls, and watch the lanterns sway at night.

See, hear, feel. You can enjoy Sanja Matsuri Festival with all of your senses. It’s a wonderful way to truly experience Tokyo. Asakusa’s history and people come alive during these 3 days. We hope you can add them to your itinerary.
