Retro architecture blending Western and Asian – Hongwanji Dendo-in is a Captivating Building
In Kyoto, you can find a wealth of captivating modern architecture alongside temples and shrines. Honganji Dendo-in (本願寺伝道院), which we’re introducing this time, is also a notable example of retro architecture in Kyoto. The building features a unique design that draws from British architecture while incorporating elements of Asian styles, including Japanese influences. It offers convenient access, so why not consider stopping by during your sightseeing?
Nishi Hongwanji is renowned as the head temple of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha Buddhist organization. A short walk east from the main gate of Nishi Hongwanji, also designated as a World Cultural Heritage site, leads you to Hongwanji Dendo-in. While it currently serves as a place for training and enlightening monks, it was originally established in 1895 as the headquarters of a life insurance company.
It was designed by the famous architect ITO Chuta, who also contributed to projects such as the Tsukiji Honganji Temple and the Great Kanto Earthquake Memorial Museum. ITO is an architectural historian, known for his research on architectural landmarks like Horyuji Temple. He has conducted extensive research in countries such as China, India, Turkey, and Greece. As a result, his architectural designs possess a distinctive beauty that harmoniously blends elements from various cultures. The building’s wall is British-style, adorned with brick-colored decorative tiles. However, the roof showcases a fusion of Western and Asian architectural styles, incorporating elements such as the Japanese Chidori roof, constructed from stone, and influences from Indian and Chinese architecture, including a rounded dome design. In addition, please pay attention to the statues that surround the building. Check out the carvings of unique spiritual animals, such as an elephant with wings and a bird with a long beak.
