Celebrate the New Year in Osaka with Top Shops for Mochi Sweets – Indulge in Chewy Traditional Confections

Omochi, (お餅, rice cake) is a popular food during the New Year. It seems that rice cakes contain wishes for longevity and good health, as well as the meaning of celebrating the New Year by eating rice cakes bringing good luck. We hope to bring the whole family together in the New Year, but if you’re tired of eating mochi in Ozoni (お雑煮, special soup to eat on New Year’s Day in Japan) or don’t have many opportunities to eat mochi at home, we recommend trying mochi sweets that you can easily enjoy around town. Osaka has a long-established sweets culture, and many shops offer a variety of Japanese sweets made with mochi and sticky rice. How about enjoying the mochi sweets in Osaka when we have more opportunities to go out this season?

Mochi Shizuku is known for its popular Daifuku, made with natural and additive-free ingredients

Mochisho Shizuku is a Japanese confectionery shop that offers fresh daifuku made that morning using only additive-free ingredients. This shop is renowned for its freshness, with the expiration date set as the date of manufacture. While the main shop is situated in Kishiwada, Osaka, the Shinmachi shop in Osaka City also features an eat-in space, allowing you to enjoy cafe time. All daifuku are made using seasonal ingredients, and some items can only be eaten at that time, such as seasonal fruit daifuku. Another reason for its popularity is that it looks very beautiful and photogenic appearance. The Framboise Daifuku featured in the photo is a bright pink, making it a perfect choice for a special day. This item is quite popular and tends to sell out soon, so we recommend making a reservation.

Mitarashi dango is said to have originated in Kyoto during the Heian period (794-1185). Mitarashi dango is a rice dumpling covered with a sweet soy sauce glaze. There are many long-established shops in Osaka selling mitarashi dango, and one of the most popular ones is Amatoto Maeda, which has multiple shops in Osaka. This shop is produced by Maeda Seika, which was founded in 1919 and is renowned for its mitarashi dango – a hearty, chewy, round dango dipped in a sweet and salty sauce. Mitarashi Parfait is also popular at the eat-in space in the store. The mitarashi dango served with a skewer of Japanese parfait has a slightly warm texture, and the sweet and salty honey intertwines with the soft serve ice cream to create an exquisite taste. As you continue to eat, you will also find warabi mochi and agar. Warabimochi is also a traditional Japanese sweet made from bracken starch and soybean flour. You can purchase the Mitarashi Dango frozen, but the parfait is a limited menu item exclusive to Osaka, so if you wish to eat it, be sure to check it out.

At first glance, it looks like an ordinary private house, Kikujudo Yoshinobu. It’s a long-established Japanese confectionary shop, that was founded in 1830. This shop is small and feels atmosphere like an old folk house, but it also has an eat-in space and is known as a hidden Japanese sweets shop in Osaka. One of its most popular offerings is Korai Mochi (高麗餅), which is said to have been named after Kabuki actor Koshiro Matsumoto VIII. This is a special set of 5 types of rice cakes, including tsubuan, white bean paste, matcha bean paste, strained bean paste, and sesame seeds. The bean paste made with Tamba’s Dainagon has an elegant taste that melts in your mouth. The beautiful color of the bean paste and the subtle sweetness are a perfect balance. We recommend eating it in the store or taking it home with tea or coffee. It sure that you will feel relieved and happy after the New Year.
