The Bunkyo Azalea Festival at Nezu Shrine in Tokyo. Surround yourself with colorful azaleas this spring.
The Bunkyo Azalea Festival (文京つつじまつり) will be held at Nezu Shrine (根津神社) in Bunkyo, Tokyo from March 30th, 2024 (Saturday) to April 30th, 2024 (Tuesday). There are about 100 different types of azaleas growing on over 3,000 shrubs here. Gaze at them as you take a walk on a nice spring day.
Nezu Shrine is over 1,900 years old. The Shaden (社殿, shrine building), Karamon (唐門, Chinese gate), and Romon (楼門, tower gate) are registered as Important Cultural Properties. It is a renowned shrine in Japan. The azalea garden is known for being one of the best spots to see azaleas in Tokyo, and the Bunkyo Azalea Festival is held annually during azalea season. During the festival, you can experience food stands, Mikoshi (神輿, portable shrine), antique markets, and so on. These events create a festive atmosphere. We recommend taking your time and wandering around.
There are said to be about 100 types of azaleas on around 3,000 shrubs here. Red, white, pink azaleas cover the shrine grounds to create a picturesque scene. Be sure to take pictures as you enjoy the view. There are higher areas, so you can see the azaleas from above as well. Azaleas come in early-blooming and late-blooming types, which means you can enjoy a different view over the course of the season. They say peak viewing season might be a bit earlier in 2024, so be on the lookout. Let the scent of azaleas heal you and enjoy a relaxing moment of peace at Nezu Shrine this spring.
