Many of you may think of tulips when you think of spring. Tulips are grown all over Japan, but Hokkaido is home to several of the largest tulip fields in the country. We’ll tell you about some tulip fields that you can visit from Sapporo, a major city in Hokkaido. Gaze upon some colorful tulips and enjoy your spring with a warm heart.

Takino Suzuran Hillside Park is home to one of the best tulip fields in Hokkaido. It’s located on the southern end of Sapporo City, and the park is about 988 acres (400ha). From May 18th to June 2nd, 2024, the Tulip/Suzuran Fest is held, and you can see colorful tulips alongside delicate Suzuran (すずらん, lily of the valley). There are about 250,000 tulip bulbs of 156 types planted here. A flowing carpet of colorful tulips in a large country garden. It’s a sight you can see only in Hokkaido. When you enter the tulip field, you’re surrounded by flowers all around you. Be sure to take a camera with you when you walk through. The place is spacious, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes here.

Yurigahara Park (百合が原公園) is located in Sapporo City, and it is about 63 acres (25.4ha). You can see about 6,400 different types of flowers and plants here. In spring, tulips of all colors are in bloom. The silo observation deck at the center of the park used to be used when the area was a dairy farm. Currently, you are not able to go up to the deck for safety reasons, but the silo itself is a popular photo spot. Take a picture with the tulips that look like a page in a storybook. There is a train that slowly goes around the park and a garden that was created collaboratively by landscapers from around the world. Take your time and enjoy all there is to see.
