Japan celebrates New Year’s Day on January 1st, but countries like China celebrate Chinese New Year. Since 1987, Chinatown in Yokohama has been celebrating Chinese New Year as well. It has become a winter staple in Yokohama. There is a countdown, colorful performances, and parades. You can enjoy the festive mood to the fullest. This year, Chinese New Year falls on January 29th. Many places in China have long breaks before and after this date, so there will most likely be many tourists in Japan during that time. The event in Yokohama is a popular event, so make sure you clear out your schedule when you come.

Get in the New Year spirit with colorful lights
There will be a light event called 2025 Shunsetsu Toka (2025春節燈花). The path from Yamashita Park to Chinatown will be decorated with colorful lights and is called the Promenade of Lights. The bridge between Chinatown and Motomachi is also decorated and transforms into the Bridge of Lights. Come walk through a wonderful atmosphere of lights. The light up display at Thien Hau Temple is known for being beautiful, so we recommend you check it out at night. The lights here use renewable energy in an effort to be more environmentally conscious. Come enjoy these beautiful lights.

Enjoy the massive lantern in Chinatown
The theme of the light event this year is “Shoryu Houki” (小龍報喜). It comes from the idea that a rising dragon brings good luck. All around Chinatown, you’ll find lanterns from those shaped like dragons to other colorful ones. Each lantern is unique, so come take pictures with the ones you like. The theme is red which is known for being good luck in Chinese culture, so you’ll get to enjoy a bright and colorful atmosphere. Celebrate the start of spring and come wish for good fortune and good health.
