The Zao Echo Line is a scenic mountain road that crosses the Zao mountain range, connecting Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures in northern Japan. Along this route lies the popular Zao Sarukura Rest House, well-known for its delicious jingisukan (grilled lamb barbecue). Conveniently located for a stop during your drive, it offers a breathtaking view of the mountains painted in shades of red and gold during autumn.

Here, you can enjoy dishes like jingisukan or soba noodles while breathing in the crisp mountain air and taking in the vast natural scenery. Nearby, there’s also a fishing pond where you can catch and eat your own fish, as well as a sweets shop called “miche.” On sunny autumn days, the outdoor terrace is the perfect place to relax and admire the colorful foliage.

Zao’s landscape changes beautifully with each season, but autumn—with its vivid colors and refreshing atmosphere—makes it one of the highlights of any trip to Yamagata.

Located on the border between Yamagata and Miyagi prefectures, Okama Crater Lake is the symbol of Zao and one of its most breathtaking sights. Surrounded by the three peaks of Mount Kattadake, Mount Kumanodake, and Mount Goshikidake, the round caldera lake gets its name “Okama” (meaning “kettle” in Japanese) from its bowl-like shape.

At an altitude of about 1,700 meters, the lake glows with an enchanting emerald-green hue. Riding the Zao-Katta Lift offers a spectacular view of the autumn-colored mountains below, making you feel as if you’re floating in the sky. In fall, the clear air allows for a panoramic view of the distant mountain ranges—an unforgettable sight that captivates all who visit.

After getting off the lift, it’s just a short walk to the Okama Observatory, where you can easily enjoy a leisurely stroll and take in the stunning landscape. With its dynamic scenery shaped by nature and the ever-changing colors of the lake throughout the seasons, Okama continues to enchant visitors year after year.
