A Popular Matchmaking Shrine to Visit on Valentine’s Day

Located just a short walk from Ochanomizu Station, Kanda Shrine is one of Tokyo’s most beloved historic shrines. Affectionately known as Kanda Myojin, it has long been revered as the guardian shrine of central Tokyo, protecting areas such as Kanda, Nihonbashi, Akihabara, Otemachi, and Marunouchi. Founded in the year 730, the shrine boasts a history of nearly 1,300 years and continues to attract worshippers from all walks of life.

Kanda Myojin is also widely known as a matchmaking shrine. One of its enshrined deities is Okuninushi-no-Mikoto, also known as Daikoku-sama, the same god worshipped at Izumo Taisha. For centuries, he has been believed to bring people together, overseeing not only romantic relationships and marriage, but also meaningful connections in work, friendships, and life as a whole. Because of this, Kanda Myojin is considered a powerful place to pray for good relationships of all kinds—including love.

The shrine grounds are filled with charming rabbit-themed amulets inspired by the legend of the White Rabbit of Inaba. Popular items include the Wish-Granting Rabbit Amulet and Enmusubi (Matchmaking) Amulets. With more than 60 different types of charms available, choosing one that matches your personal wish is part of the fun. There is even a heart-shaped object within the grounds, symbolizing romantic fulfillment and making it a popular photo spot for visitors.

After paying your respects, be sure to stop by EDOCCO, the shrine’s cultural exchange center. Inside, you’ll find amulet counters, goshuin (shrine stamp) services, and the stylish IKIIKI shop offering beautifully designed lucky charms and original goods.

Despite being located in the heart of the city, Kanda Myojin offers a warm, tranquil atmosphere rich in history. As you explore Tokyo, why not take a gentle stroll here and wish for a meaningful connection—especially around Valentine’s Day?
