Along the stone-paved paths of Gotenzeki, water flows gently as wooden buildings line the way, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. With each step, the soft sound of the stream echoes pleasantly, helping you forget the bustle of everyday life. While not flashy, the area offers a calm, nostalgic charm, where time seems to pass at a slower, more relaxed pace.
Surrounding the area, you’ll find a variety of places to stop by, including Japanese restaurants serving Yamagata’s local cuisine and sake, long-established soba shops, and cafés set in beautifully preserved kura (storehouses). There are also lifestyle shops showcasing local craftsmanship, as well as select stores featuring traditional crafts such as Yonezawa textiles—making it easy to enjoy dining, café hopping, and shopping at a leisurely pace.

A must-visit in the Gotenzeki area is the greengrocer “Machinaka Yaoya,” located inside the commercial complex Lulutas Nanokamachi. Opened in 2021 by the long-established Yamagata fruit and vegetable shop Green Shop Harada, the store offers a wide selection of fresh produce sourced both locally and from across Japan. There is also an eat-in space, where you can relax at the counter or along the Gotenzeki waterside while enjoying the view.

One of the highlights of this greengrocer is its dessert menu, made generously with seasonal fruits. Among the most popular items are the fruit sandwiches, packed with large, chunky pieces of fruit. The balance between the fresh fruit and the smooth, creamy filling is exceptional. Despite their generous size, they remain light and easy to enjoy.
