Feel attractions of spring and summer in Tokyo! 2 recommended festivals held around Akihabara

千鳥ヶ淵の夜桜(Illuminated cherry blossoms along Chidori-ga-fuchi)

In Japan, cold winter is about to end and spring when cherry blossoms are full in bloom is around the corner. Tokyo has lots of famous spots for cherry blossom viewing, so it is transformed into a cherry blossoms wonderland from around late-March. When it gets the season of summer festivals, historical festivals such as the three largest festivals of Edo are held one after another. Why not feel attractions of Tokyo’s springs and summer through cherry blossom events and summer festivals?

This time, we’re going to introduce popular festivals held in the area around Akihabara Washington Hotel.

“Chiyoda City SAKURA Festival” allowing you to be intoxicated with a sakura-colored world

咲き誇る桜と千鳥ヶ淵(Cherry blossoms in full bloom and Chidori-ga-fuchi)

Chidori-ga-fuchi Ryokudo is a 700-meter long promenade along the moat of the Imperial Palace. From 29th March to 8th April, “Chiyoda City SAKURA Festival” will be held here, and visitors can enjoy cherry blossom viewing while walking through the tunnel of about 260 Yoshino cherry trees that are lined along the promenade. It’s also attractive to see illuminated cherry blossoms at night while rowing a boat floating in Chidori-ga-fuchi moat. In addition, various events are taken place at popular spots for cherry blossom viewing around Chidori-ga-fuchi Ryokudo, such as Yasukuni Shrine and Kitano Maru Park. Why not visit Chiyoda to explore the world of cherry blossoms dyed in pale pink?

Sanno Festival making you feel like you’re traveling into the Edo era

提灯に照らされた日枝神社(Hie Shrine illuminated by lanterns)

“Sanno Festival” is famous as one of the three largest festivals in Japan along with Gion Festival in Kyoto and Tenjin Festival in Osaka. This festival had been held as Tenka Festival for Shoguns since the period of Iemitsu Tokugawa (3rd Shogun of Tokugawa family) who contributed greatly to Edo Shogunate. Now, it’s called “Sannno Festival” and held once every two years at Hie Shrine, which was the guardian of Edo Castle. It’s also attractive that 20 festivals will be held during the period of Sanno Festival. In particular, don’t miss ‘Shinko Festival’ featuring a 300m procession parade around Imperial Palace, and ‘Rengo Miyairi’ where you can witness people climbing 52 stone stairs while shouldering floats and portable shrines. Please see the scenery which Tokugawa’s family once saw and feel the same festive atmosphere as in the Edo era!
