The crispy and fluffy pancake which is made from dough after receiving orders -“Coffee Tengoku”
Asakusa, where history and culture are alive, is a fun place allowing you to stroll while feeling a nostalgic atmosphere. Besides, it has lots of eateries suitable for taking a break such as old-established cafes featuring Japanese-style sweets and stylish ones. From among them, this time, we’re going to introduce a coffee shop “Coffee Tengoku” offering pancakes that satisfy stomachs of those who are a bit peckish.
“Coffee Tengoku (珈琲天国, coffee heaven)” features an awning with ‘天国’ drawn in the center of a coffee cup and a brick exterior. It’s located near the entrance of Asakusa Rokku-Dori Street which we introduced before. Although it opened in 2005, its tasteful atmosphere reminiscent of the good old days makes us feel nostalgic and our hearts warm. When you enter the cafe, the owner welcomes you with his bright smile. Apparently, he manages this cafe with 15 seats by himself.
Our recommendation is its regular dish “Pancake.” He is particular about making the dough after receiving customers’ orders. When the pancake with a sweet scent is carried to you, retro and adorable letters ‘天国’ which is branded on the surface of the pancake catch your eyes. It seems that he carefully bakes it one by one with a copper plate making the heat even, so its outside is crispy and inside is fluffy. The rich flavor of butter, the original scent of flour and the mellow sweetness are blended and explode in your mouth. The pancake is served with maple syrup and butter, but you should first try to eat it without any seasoning.
Don’t forget to order coffee with it! The coffee that is carefully brewed and has a rich flavor goes well with the pancake. In addition, pay attention to a coffee cup full of humor. If you’re lucky, you can even come across the letters ‘大吉 (Great fortune)’ on the bottom after finishing drinking.
By the way, lots of its original items are lined up on walls, such as adorable coffee bean cans handmade by local craftsmen, magnets using its pancake as a motif and Japanese hand towels that become stuffed when being cut and filled with cotton. It’s good an idea to buy them as a souvenir.
