蓮に彩られた不忍池(Shinobazu Lake colored by lotus)
This picture was taken in late July 2021.

Here is “Shinobazu Pond (不忍池),” which is located in the southwestern part of Ueno Park. This pond is said to have been famous as a lotus viewing spot since the late 1600s because it is written as a poem with lotuses in ‘Edo Suzume’ published in 1677. However, lotuses were removed from the pond during World WarⅡ to turn into paddy fields. After the war, it became its current appearance.

The pond is covered with lush lotus leaves, and their adorable pink-color flowers appear here and there. In the background, you can see ‘Shinobazu Pond Bentendo (Ueno Bentendo, 不忍池辯天堂)’ which is located in the center of the pond. It produces Japanese elements in the summer scenery. Moreover, there are 5 varieties of lotuses: Oga Lotus (大賀蓮), Clear Mirror Lotus (明鏡蓮), Shokko Lotus (蜀紅蓮), Jyodai Lotus (浄台蓮), Shinobazu Ike Madara Lotus (不忍池斑蓮). Let’s head to ‘Lotus Observation Zone’ and look at them closely from the deck!

By the way, lotuses are open until noon. It gets close afternoon, so you should visit Shinobazu Pond early.
