“Azuma Bridge” with vivid color appearance connecting the center of Asakusa and Mukojima
“Azuma Bridge”, a bridge over the Sumida River from Asakusa. The gorgeous outlook colored in red is eye-catching.
If you stand on the Asakusa side, the other side of the bridge, you can see the impressive golden object of the head office building of Asahi Breweries, Ltd. Don’t forget to witness TOKYO SKYTREE® at the same point. The former Azuma Bridge was built by the townspeople with the approval of the Shogun (general) in the Edo Period (1603-1868), and the construction took over 5 years from 1774. It was rebuilt many times and the current bridge was completed in 1931. It’s been witnessing the development of Asakusa while changing its appearance over time.
If you take a picture of the modern cityscape of Asakusa from the bridge, where people of the Edo period also came and went, you should feel a deep sense of romance.

無数の架線が張り巡らされた空間を電車が走り抜ける、迫力満点の光景に胸が高鳴る「曳舟駅」
This pic was taken at Hikifune Sta. It’s 2 stations away from Asakusa Sta. on the Tobu railway which is about 10 minutes’ walk from Hotel Tavinos Asakusa. We recommend you take pics at the platform where the Tobu Skytree line is running. When you look up to the sky, countless overhead wires catch your eyes. Underneath them, trains pass closely each other or run side-by-side. The view is so dynamic that you’re sure to have butterflies in your stomach. Also, don’t miss seeing the view of 3 lines of Tobu railway, Tokyo Metro and Tokyu railway running parallel. It’s very popular among those who love to take pics of trains. By the way, around Hikifune Staition with a nostalgic atmosphere, there are old folk house cafes. If you stop at the station, it might be a good idea to visit them. |

“Yanagishima Footbridge”, a hidden spot where you can see the whole 634m – tall TOKYO SKYTREE®
This pic was taken from “Yanagishima Footbridge (柳島歩道橋) ” near ‘Jukkenbashi Bridge (十間橋),’ which is known as a viewing spot of TOKYO SKYTREE®. There is nothing to obstruct your sight, so you can enjoy a picturesque view with TOKYO SKYTREE®︎ standing out. Its appearance with beauty and powerfulness will let you forget the time. TOKYO SKYTREE®︎ is lit up by LED at night. On the day when we took this pic, it was illuminated with blue-color light with a wish of our overcoming the COVID-19 situation. By the way, its usual basic color has 3 types: ‘Iki(粋)’ based on light blue, ‘Miyabi(雅)’ based on purple and ‘Nobori(幟)’ based on orange. These colors change every day. In addition, there are also various special lightings to suit the seasons and events. Sometimes it’s full of elegance, other times it may be powerful.

Japan’s oldest existing underground shopping street lets you feel as if traveling Japan that is more than half a century ago
“Asakusa Underground Shopping Street” was made in 1955. It is not only the third oldest underground shopping street after Kanda and Ginza but also the oldest underground one that still exists in Japan. At the time of construction, opening stores underground was so groundbreaking that it gathered lots of attention as one of the symbols of reconstruction in postwar Japan. Stepping into here, you can feel the mysterious atmosphere different from the vibrant one above ground. Ceiling with exposed pipes, little dirty concrete walls and floor with marks of water-leak are combined with the dimness creates the retro space. The corridor, which is about 100m long, is filled with different types of shops. All of them with less than 33㎡ whose inside can be seen from the corridor are unique.
You’re sure to experience the old Japanese atmosphere of more than half a century ago. By the way, posters saying ‘就寝厳禁 (Don’t sleep here!)’ is a specialty of the Asakusa Underground Shopping Street. Why not find them while exploring here? It can be directly accessed from the underground passageway from the Tobu and Ginza lines.
