“Former Shimbashi Station”, an exhibition room of the first Shimbashi Station
Here is “Former Shimbashi Station” which is a 5-minute walk from the current Shimbashi Station. Its classical appearance is the reproduced Former Shimbashi Station, Japan’s first railway terminal station born in 1872, as faithfully as possible. It creates a comfortable place among modern buildings.
This station used to play an important role as the first station on the line connecting Shimbashi and Yokohama. It was designed by American architect, Richard Bridgens. However, because there are no documents telling what material or color was used for its appearance, people decided ones by referring to the literature and pictures at that time. Today, this building has a modern design considering disaster prevention measures and is barrier-free.
n the exhibition room, you can see historic things related to the station and special railway exhibitions for free. Besides, masonry platforms rails and something like that reminds you of that time when the steam locomotive was running.
