Rebuilding from Showa Period’s Modernist Architecture-“ROHM Theatre Kyoto” with lots of Entertainment
“ROHM Theatre Kyoto” (ロームシアター京都) located in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto was renovated the Kyoto Kaikan (京都会館) called the masterpiece of Modern Architecture, which was built after the War. Reopened in 2016, the building which has been the 5th anniversary is definitely quaint architecture.
Kyoto Kaikan was designed by famous architect Kunio Maekawa (前川國男) in 1960. ROHM Theatre Kyoto was founded with modern new value while reproducing its original design and features as much as possible.
The appearance, it’s the strong construction that is expressed by concrete in the original wooden architecture. The roof has been curved upward in the image of the roof shape of the Sanmon Gate of Nanzenji Temple (南禅寺山門). In addition, the balcony with the big eave on the 2nd floor also remains as it is, currently, the place is used as a resting area and café.
“ROHM Theatre Kyoto” on a spacious site consists of 3 large and small halls. There are 2 small multipurpose halls and the Main Hall with around 2,000 seats, where large performances can be held. Moreover, TSUTAYA BOOKSTORE and STARBUCKS COFFEE are also annexed to the theatre, including cafe &restaurant ‘Kyoto Modern Terrace’ on the 2nd floor.
