Stop by at “Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum” with Cafe to Enjoy Special Exhibitions When Visiting Tokyo Station
“Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum(三菱一号館美術館)” opened in Marunouchi, Tokyo in 2010. Among many modern buildings lined up, the elegant red-brick facade of this museum will catch your eye in the district. The museum has been replacing the exhibitions regularly, it is attractive to be able to appreciate different works depending on the time.
The red-brick building, which can be said to be a symbol of the museum, has been restored the Mitsubishi Ichigokan which was built in 1894. It was designed by the English architect Josiah Conder, whose work includes western-style Rokumeikan(鹿鳴館), is generally acknowledged to be the ‘Father of modern Japanese architecture. This whole building makes use of the Queen Anne style of architecture that was popular in England in the late 19th century, it features curvy furniture and graceful decoration.
The building has collections that mainly include western artworks from the late 19th century. There are also ceramic, silverware and glassworks, including paintings, and you can appreciate Japanese Ukiyo-E and traditional dyeing tools ‘pattern paper’. In addition, there is a history-experiencing room of Marunouchi ‘Archive Room’ as well, it is recommended to experience the history of the city at the same time.
Furthermore, the museum cafe ‘Cafe 1894’ and museum shop ‘Store 1894’ are located in the building, too. ‘Cafe1894’ has been restored the space, which was used as a bank office when it was founded in 1894. With a double-layer atrium and a feeling of openness, you can enjoy your meal in a classic and quaint space.
