The Beautiful Red-Brick Station Building is Designated as an Important Cultural Property. It’s a Waste to just Pass by! – Tokyo Station
Tokyo Station is a mysterious and sacred atmosphere built from the beauty of its 100-year-old red brick architecture. The station building is designated as an important cultural property of Japan, and it’s worth taking the time to appreciate this beautiful landmark during your trip. Also Inside the station, you’ll find many highlights, so spend a lot of time in the mystical building.
Tokyo Station opened in 1914. The Marunouchi station building, a Renaissance building with 3 floors and over 300 meters in length, was designed by Kingo Tatsuno, who also designed the Bank of Japan’s main branch. It was made using approximately 7.67 million bricks for its structure. However, 31 years after opening, some parts were damaged by air raids during the Pacific War. Restoration work was completed in 1947, including reducing the 3-story station building to a 2-story building. After that, in 2007, they started preservation work on the 1st and 2nd floors and restoration work on the 3rd floor. It was rebuilt in 2012 to its original appearance when it first opened.
The station building could also say that this is a culmination of Tatsuno, who led the Japanese architectural world. Along with the red bricks that cover the exterior walls, the building’s distinctive feature is the graceful curved north dome and south dome. When you look up from inside the building, it has an octagonal shape with its 8 stately eagle sculptures (diameter 2.1 meters). There are many other highlights on the premises, such as the zero-kilometer post that marks the starting point of the railway line. How about taking your time to enjoy this station, which has great historical value?
