Designated as a National Scenic Spot Where Plum Blossoms Bloom in Full – Enjoy the Arrival of Spring at Shosei-en Garden

Shosei-en Garden (渉成園) is a popular tourist spot in Kyoto, where you can enjoy the seasonal beautiful scenery. Plum blossoms start to bloom in early February every year, delighting the tourists. Higashi Hongan-ji Temple (東本願寺), is the head temple of the Otani-ha branch of the Jodo Shinshu, ShinBuddhism, which is popularly known as Ohigashi-san from Kyoto citizen. 6 buildings have been designated as important national cultural properties, such as the Goei-do-mon (御影堂門), Goei-do (御影堂), and Amida-do Hall (阿弥陀堂), which are said to be the tallest double wooden gate in Japan. This time, we’re going to introduce Shosei-en Garden which is the temple’s national scenic area. In 1936, it was designated as a national scenic spot because visitors can appreciate the beautiful scenery that changes with the seasons. This spot, known as the ’13 Views,’ is said to have fallen into disrepair around 1956. Therefore, starting around 1975, it was gradually repaired and returned to its former appearance.

There are many things to see in the garden, especially 2 beautiful ponds. A small pond in the northwest of the site, and a large pond named Ingetsuchi (印月池) in the southeast. Ingetsuchi has a central island and a Kaitorou (回棹廊, Chinese-corridor-style bridge), so you can take a walk around the park while enjoying the beautiful landscape. In addition, the plum blossoms at Soubaien (双梅檐), located on the west side of Ingetsu, reach their peak from February to March every year.
