Hike through the island of Miyajima! Rediscover the charms of Miyajima in Hiroshima

Many people think of Itsukushima Shrine when they think of Miyajima. But, the whole island of Miyajima has always been a spiritual place. Mount Misen is considered sacred by many, and Misen Wild Woods is a registered natural monument. From spring to the beginning of summer, the abundance of greenery creates the perfect hiking spot. If you visit Miyajima, take your time, explore different spots, and get in touch with nature.

To get to Miyajima from Hiroshima Washington Hotel, take the Sanyo Main Line from Hiroshima Station. After about 30 minutes, get off at Miyajimaguchi Station and ride the ferry for 10 minutes.

Enjoy nature among the beautiful summer greens at Momijidani Park

Momijidani Park is known for its red leaves in the fall. This lush park is a 20-minute walk from Miyajima Port. The red bridge at its entrance is a popular spot for photos. The sounds of the burbling brook are refreshing, and the nature is beautiful. Deeper into the park, it turns into a proper trekking trail, but Shinomiya Shrine (四宮神社) is near the entrance, so you can enjoy a walk near the entrance, too. The stairs and stone gates on the path to Shinomiya Shrine are shrouded in maple leaves. It has an otherworldly feel. Whereas Itsukushima Shrine attracts many tourists, this spot is a hidden gem, so you can really relax in nature. A cable car is available for those who want to get to the top of the mountain.

大聖院(Daishoin)

It is said that Daishoin (大聖院) was created in the year 806. The renowned temple is the oldest on Miyajima island. Mount Misen has three hiking trails. One of these is the “Daishoin Route” that passes by Daishoin. It is a 10-minute walk from the exit of Itsukushima Shrine. It makes a great spot to stop by on your walk or hike. Many Jizo (お地蔵様) and Buddha (仏様) are enshrined in Daishoin. One of the main spots is a cave-like room called Henjo Cave (遍照窟). The inside is veiled in a soft light and has a mystical atmosphere. They say that one walk around the object of worship will get you as much luck as doing a special, 88-temple pilgrimage. Those who want to climb Mount Misen after visiting Daishoin should wear comfortable shoes.

ふじたや(Fujitaya)

Fujitaya is a well-established restaurant specializing in Anago (穴子, conger eel). It’s been a part of a quiet neighborhood since 1902. It is the only restaurant on the island with a Michelin star. Miyajima is famous for Anago, but Fujitaya serves a special Anago that was caught using a unique method. Their Anago-meshi (あなごめし, conger eel rice bowl) is served in a bowl with a wooden lid. When the lid is opened, the delicious aroma of grilled conger eel wafts out. The Anago is cut into bite-sized pieces and placed on a bed of hot rice. The taste is exquisite. Indulge in the fluffy, shiny Anago to your heart’s content. The restaurant always has a long line, so be sure to check the wait time before you make your plans. Eat some delicious Anago-meshi before your sightseeing tour around Miyajima.
