Go through the history and culture of Asakusa, Tokyo on a rickshaw. Take a trip with the rickshaw runners.
Japanese traditional culture is deeply rooted in Tokyo’s Asakusa. One thing they are known for is the Jinriki-sha (人力車, rickshaw). There has been a documentary made about the rickshaws in Asakusa. There are over 10 separate companies that provide rickshaw services. Every day, they run through the streets carrying tourists. The rickshaw runners know the place inside and out. Traveling with them is a way to get to know an Asakusa that you can’t find in guidebooks.
The rickshaw was born at the beginning of the Meiji period (1868-1912). It was inspired by two-wheeled carriages from Europe and sedan chairs which were portable seats that could be carried. Rickshaws were faster than palanquins which were common until the Edo period (1603-1868) and cheaper than horses, so they became popular quickly. Now, they are seen as Japan’s traditional mode of transportation and are often found in famous tourist spots like Asakusa, Kyoto, and Kamakura.
Not only can you enjoy a step back in time, but you can enjoy talking with the knowledgeable rickshaw runners. Hear about the history and culture of Asakusa, learn information about lesser known spots, and laugh at the rickshaw runners’ little anecdotes. It’s a different experience than walking around alone. Asakusa first-timers enjoy an Asakusa-filled trip. Asakusa regulars learn things even they don’t know. Why not give it a try?
