Gaze at the Moon and Enjoy Traditional Arts: A Special Autumn Night at Hama-rikyu Gardens

Experience an elegant moon-viewing event right in the heart of the city. “Moon-Viewing Stroll at Hama-rikyu Gardens – Admiring the Harvest Moon in the Shogun’s Garden” invites visitors to enjoy a magical autumn evening in this historic landscape once belonging to the Tokugawa shogunate. During the event period, opening hours will be extended until 9 p.m., allowing guests to explore the illuminated garden. The harmony of moonlight and gentle lighting creates a breathtakingly beautiful scene.

One of the main highlights is the series of traditional performances. Each evening, two groups of artists (one on October 31) will present classic Japanese performing arts such as Noh, Kagura, shakuhachi, shamisen, and koto. Against the serene backdrop of the night garden, their sounds and movements transport the audience to another world. At the Tsukimidai (Moon-Viewing Platform), a special offering of rice dumplings will be made—a rare opportunity to witness a ritual passed down since the Edo period.

Visitors can also join special guided tours conducted in both Japanese and English. Learning about the garden’s history and highlights adds depth to the stroll. At Nakajima-no-Ochaya teahouse, guests can savor an event-exclusive nerikiri (traditional Japanese sweet) with matcha, or enjoy a cup of sake for a truly refined moment.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, food trucks will line the garden paths, offering light meals and drinks to enjoy while strolling. Shops selling indigo-dyed accessories and other traditional crafts will also be on site. Combining beauty, taste, and craftsmanship, this moon-viewing celebration is one of Tokyo’s must-see autumn events.
