Enjoy the Attractive Entire Precincts of “Daigoji Temple” Brightly Colored with Autumn Leaves
World Heritage “Daigoji Temple” (醍醐寺) is located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto. Especially, the season of autumn leaves and cherry blossoms, it’s a famous tourist spot that is crowded with many people. Even now, ‘Ho-Taiko Hanami Gyoretsu’ (豊太閤花見行列) is held every Spring because Toyotomi Hideyoshi had ‘Daigo no Hanami’ (Cherry blossom viewing party at Daigo) in 1598 at the ‘Sanboin’ (三宝院).
Although there are many highlights on the premises, the most famous structure is ‘Goju-no-to’ (五重塔, five-storied pagoda, national treasure). There are multiple pagodas, but the pagoda of Daigoji Temple completed in 951 is the oldest one in Kyoto. It’s also famous for having the oldest statue of Kukai (空海, known as Kobo Daishi). The temple is specially lit up in the fall, so you can see the fantastic scenery.
In addition, ‘Sanboin Garden’ (三宝院庭園) which was designed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉), is famous for its beautiful autumn leaves. It is designated as a national special place of scenic beauty, make the visitors have fun. Especially, ‘Benten-do’ (弁天堂) is a scenic spot for autumn colors. Many people visit to take photos of the suburb view reflected on the surface of the water, including the color of Maple and Ginkgo.
Moreover, you can enjoy the main building of the temple ‘Kondo’ (金堂), and ‘Daigo Sui’ (醍醐水), which is said to be the birthplace of the temple. Why not feel the beautiful nature and history while strolling in the precincts?
