If It’s Sunny, Let’s Visit Heiwajima Sta. to Fully Play, Learn and Eat!

大森ふるさとの浜辺公園(Omori Furusato Seaside Park)

Have you ever visited “Heiwajima Station” on the Keikyu Honsen Line? It’s a 10-minute train ride from Shinagawa Station and a 15-minute from Haneda Airport, and you can head for this station without exchanging trains. Although Heiwajima is great access from the heart of Tokyo, it has rich nature including the sea and trees. This time, from spots around the station, we picked up ones recommended for trips with children. Why not play with various types of playsets that give you an experience like an attraction, learn about the charm of seaweed at the first beachy ward park in Tokyo, and fill your stomach with Japanese-style high-quality bread?

Every spot in this issue is within a walking distance from Heiwajima Station (KK08) which is 5 stations away on Haneda Airport bound Asakusa Line(A) Express service from Mita Station (A08/I04).

“Heiwa no Mori Park” (平和の森公園), the largest park in Ota City, was constructed after reclaiming the Heiwajima Canal that once existed. The park consists with two areas: the exercise area on the south side with tennis courts and obstacle courses, and a cozy area on the north side with rich greenery including a lawn plaza and a pond. Among the park’s attractions, Field Athletic Courses (フィールドアスレチックコース, outdoor obstacle courses) with more than 40 playsets attract kids. Have fun with a wide range of obstacles such as crawling up the net, climbing high walls, crossing suspended bridges, and challenging the zip-line. Don’t forget to try the attractions installed in another area you can access via the promenade crossing the park, where you can challenge crossing the pond by walking on the swaying logs, or rowing the boat made from a barrel.

At Omori Furusato-no-Hamabe Park (大森ふるさとの浜辺公園), the first municipal beach park in Tokyo reproducing the Omori coast before the area around Heiwajima was reclaimed, you will find “Omori Nori Museum” (海苔のふるさと館) where you can enjoy experience-based learning about the seaweed cultivation culture of the neighborhood. In the museum, in addition to seeing the diorama exhibition that reproduces the work scene of cultivating seaweed by hand, you can actually try on the stilts-shaped clogs used for walking in the shallow sea, and the typical work clothes for seaweed harvesters. Besides, you cannot miss the exhibition of the last existing seaweed boat built in the 1950s.

“Daimei no Nai Pan-ya” (題名のないパン屋, Untitled Bakery) is a to-go-only white bread shop opened in April 2019 run by a Japanese deli established in 1884. The unusual name of this bakery is after the owner’s thought that ‘the true deliciousness cannot be described with words and does not need any stories behind’. There are three kinds of bread, ‘Plain’ (プレーン), ‘Miso’ (味噌) and ‘Budo’ (葡萄, grape) available, and all of which are made with ingredients considered paired with Japanese dishes. In particular, ‘Miso’ made with the traditional sweet Miso that has been produced since 1885 in which the rich flavor of soybeans and the sweetness of rice malt are well blended is the bakery’s signature item. Once you experience the ultimate soft texture and how it melts in your mouth which is created by making the best use of the water-retaining capacity of Miso, you will be crazy for it.
