The Contemporary Art Gallery Used to Be Sento over 70 Years Ago – “SCAI THE BATHHOUSE” with The Architectural Style Unique to Tokyo
A contemporary art gallery ‘SCAI THE BATHHOUSE’ is located close to the Tokyo National Museum and Tokyo Art Museum. This gallery was renovated the Sento (public bath) built in 1951, and it’s the spot where you can enjoy both the arts on display and the building with a good nostalgic atmosphere.
‘SCAI THE BATHHOUSE’ is located in Taniya, Taito-ku, Tokyo which has old buildings and strongly remains retro atmosphere. The gallery building itself was built as Sento ‘Kashiwayu’ (柏湯) in 1951. It was reborn as a contemporary art gallery in 1993 while retaining its nostalgic atmosphere and holding exhibitions not only the artists who are active from home and abroad but also young artists.
The art on display, of course, and the appearance of the building are also highlights of this gallery. It’s constructed in the traditional ‘Miyazaki shrine style’ with splendid roofing tiles. This style is particular to Sento in Tokyo, so it’s a valuable thing that can only be seen in Tokyo. There are various theories as to the reason for the birth, such as cheering people up after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 or making it eye-catching so that many customers would come. In addition, please pay attention to the blue tiles on either side of the entrance that enhance the atmosphere of a Sento. Each piece has a different expression, so it’s fun just to look at them. It’s fascinating not only the artworks but also the Sento architecture unique to Tokyo.
